Nonsurgical and Surgical Treatments

Nonsurgical treatments. Many nonsurgical treatment options have been investigated as alternatives to surgery for treating Dupuytren’s contracture. These include physical therapy with intermittent or continuous splinting, radiation therapy and vitamin E.

Surgical treatments. Several types of surgery may effectively treat Dupuytren’s contracture. Surgical procedures differ on characteristics like how much tissue is removed, the type of incision, and the length of recovery. Types of surgery include:

  • FasciectomyFasciectomy
Surgical procedure in which diseased tissue is removed through cuts in the palm and affected finger(s); skin grafts may be needed to tighten the skin.
  • FasciotomyFasciotomy
Surgical procedure that involves cutting through fascia and cords.
  • Needle aponeurotomyNeedle aponeurotomy
Surgical procedure in which the surgeon uses a small needle-like blade to weaken a Dupuytren’s cord; also called needle fasciotomy [fass ee AH tuh mee].
